Himachal Pradesh is popularly known as the "The Summer Capital of India". Most of the state of Himachal Pradesh lies in the foothills of the Dhauladhar Range. Shilla peak is the highest mountain at the height of 7025m.The drainage system of Himachal is composed both of rivers and glaciers.

The Ganges and Indus basins are provided water by the Himalayan rivers as they criss-cross the entire mountain chain.

The Chandrabhaga or the Chenab, the Ravi, the Beas, the Sutlej, and the Yamuna are the drainage systems of the region.These rivers are perennial and are fed by snow and rainfall and are protected by the extensive coverage of natural vegetation.

Himachal Pradesh has a great variation in the climatic conditions due to extreme variation in elevation. The climatic condition varies from cold, alpine, and glacial in the northern and eastern mountain ranges and hot and sub-humid tropical in the southern area. The city which receives a very heavy rainfall is Dharamsala and is also known as the state's winter capital, while areas like Lahaul and Spiti are cold and almost rainless. Himachal Pradesh experiences three seasons, summer, winter, and rainy season.
